018 - Oof. Jury Duty (the show)
🍰 Midnight Cheesecake Recap: Our Jury Duty Obsession
Spoilers but not really - In this episode, we dive into the wild and hilarious Amazon Prime show Jury Duty. Ruha she got completely hooked on the series and tried convincing everyone to watch it ASAP. Bekah finally gave in and binged all eight episodes in one day - and instantly got Joe on board too. We all agree: it’s one of those shows that sticks with you and makes you laugh out loud, as often as possible.
The show follows Ronald Gladden, a regular guy who thinks he’s part of a documentary about jury duty. What he doesn’t know is that everyone else - judge, lawyers, fellow jurors - is an actor, and the whole thing is staged. We can't get over Ronald’s kindness and how he treats everyone with respect, especially Todd, the quirky inventor next door. That moment when Ronald shows Todd A Bug’s Life to help him feel seen? Our hearts = puddles on the floor.
We go through all the ridiculous characters: Inez judging people by their hair, Todd and his chair pants (chants, if you will), Vanessa from the Reddit Bureau of Investigation, and James Marsden playing a hilariously self-absorbed version of himself. The improv moments, like the “oof” exchange between James and Lonnie, are pure gold.
Ruha and Bekah also wonder why the show hasn't been a wider sensation, and about how the show’s title might’ve thrown people off - it sounds like a courtroom drama, but it’s actually a mix of The Office and The Truman Show. Please weigh in on this, because Ruha is dying to know what's stopping you from watching it. We talk about how Ronald handled the big reveal and how it affected him afterward. Turns out, it was a lot to process, but he had support and was back to his old self in record time (plus, he has a corgi - bonus points!).
We wrap things up by sharing our favorite snacks (frozen lemonade pie and Tillamook ice cream, yes please), chatting about cute tumblers and Uniqlo finds, and looking forward to future podcast episodes. We’re definitely doing one on Ted Lasso one day - Bekah has bragging rights about that one.
So if you haven’t watched Jury Duty yet, trust us: it’s worth it. Eight quick episodes, tons of laughs, and a surprising amount of heart. Let us know what you think - we’re dying to hear your favorite moments!
